What kind of tech or software can you best use to mitigate ADHD and stay a functional adult? I just missed out on the military parade because I forgot to write down the time and date for the event, because I forgot to find a program for my phone or desktop to allow me to set calendar dates or reminders.

Mind you, this is mostly just in regards to repeated daily or weekly functions. Set it up once and forget about it, then you have a little buzzing reminder on your wrist at all points in time. Works for events too if youre on top of things and set the alarm/reminder right away. If you can't remember to keep the damn thing charged, set a reminder for that too.

Will be working in network closet. Holding screwdriver. unscrew thing. Pickup screws, put down driver. immediately lose object permanence on driver. its gone. awkwardly spin around for 5 minutes looking. find it. realize I put down the screws while looking. repeat ad nauseum. this just happened to me at work yesterday, in front of another coworker. its usually pretty embaressing, but I just roll with it. helps I'm good at my job.

I honestly have just had to shape life around me. its worked for the most part. but yeah my brain is a constant mess, but I also refuse to take drugs outside of my caffiene addiction, probably the only thing that keeps me sane, but I can only take it in the early morning or else it really fucks with me
personally reminder apps have never worked for me, and instead I just use schizo notes. I find the best systems are systems that match my discordant chaotic brain. it helps me 'remember' by being just as scattered and chaotic, so it 'makes sense' to my head. so if I have a dozen unnamed notes in note+++ or my phone notes app or on margins in notebooks, I find things faster and easier than if I were to create a neat organized folder structure, which to me is insane. If I do the latter, I just forget about it, and then its a ton of sunk time and cost. but if I do the former, my brain will be like 'oh duh we have that random note from 6 weeks ago inbetween the two other random notes about unrelated shit' and I can go look for it.

ADHD copers love talking about brain scans of inconsistent results which is almost never done in diagnosis. the diagnosis is performed by asking you "do you sometimes feel distracted"

ADHD is a collection of symptoms.
The underlying reasons are probably very different
You have some people with real difference in norepinephrine and dopamine handling in the brain, like actual physical differences.
Then you probably have people who just need something more mild
This is the reason why people say adhd isn’t real and some swear it is:
The term covers a very wide number of groups with different root causes imo

the fact i was diagnosed isn't even something i "use". i don't mention it to anyone, i try to fit in but just can't. i wish it wasn't real. any time i mentioned it in the past has been met with scepticism and rejection, so i've stopped doing it. you don't have to understand what i live with, but don't pretend like you know enough to say it's not a real thing.

I was diagnosed as an adult in work healthcare that doesn't want to just stamp a paper and let you go, they get paid for it so my tests lasted the entire day. Also I saw a different specialist another day that did sensory examinations so every explanation was covered. All my test results were compared to the average results for people who don't have ADHD. If they deviated a lot one way or the other it was a sign of ADHD. The final straw was when I started the meds and felt nothing when a regular person would get a dopamine hit, that's why they want to use them recreationally. Also I'm not American so any trend that goes on there doesn't apply directly.

But with the terrible decline of quality in software and user experience, it's not hard to see why you'd have someone getting lost after you cross the threshold of 2007 level information technology.

Yes, and we made everyone dumber in the process. Complex ideas require attention spans of longer than 3 minutes, and instead of telling ADHD kids maybe certain topics simply aren't suited for them, we changed education to suit 3-minute max attention spans. Now we have kids that are otherwise fully capable of learning complex subjects that have been reduced to only knowing the most superficial and over-simplified bullet points that would fit in a TikTok video.
All so ADHD kids don't feel left out. It would be better for humanity if we simply accepted certain things weren't "for them" and everybody else could reach their full potential.

If anybody took what I've said in the last few posts to mean I'm anti-medication or anti-cognitive behavioral therapy or anything like that that actually helps kids, that isn't what I meant at all. I'm just saying that after all that, there may be a ceiling on what some people can do, even with help, and that should be considered normal and OK and we shouldn't organize society around edge cases like that.

ADHD is like that. A lot of people have "ADHD" because they fried their dopamine receptors scrolling tiktok. But other people have neurons which are simply less capable of releasing dopamine in response to stimuli than normal human neurons. The people who browse tiktok all day are the fat fucks, the people who have this problem even in the complete absence of feeds are the ones with the faulty organ.

Its both, the brain is a self training machine that doubles down on habits, both good and bad. The more you do something, the more inclined you are to do it again, and the less inclined you are to do something else. It also can be more or less inclined to building these patterns. People with ADHD struggle to release dopamine in response to stimuli, causing the building of these pathways to be much harder.

My mother tried everything she could to keep me off meds and undiagnosed. Then the school threatened to put me in the special ed class, so I had to get diagnosed and put on adderall. After that I functioned just fine in school, and only stopped functioning once I got off. I know it wasn't because of some chemical addiction, because I would quit adderall every break because I hated being on the stuff.

before getting on meds, pay close attention to your current risk taking. then if you get the urge to make a more than minor life decision, stop yourself and get off the medication for a few months before going through with it. the "increased risk taking" side effect is not always as obvious and innocuous like buying a lottery ticket, but can be almost imperceptible 'little things' that add up. like being too open and unreserved with people and thinking that changing careers is viable when its really not.

They don't help that much against the executive dysfunction tho. In that regard they're only part of the equation. Most of the time I still have to do all the right things for things to work. Like eleminate distractions from my evironment. But thar makes it very easy to fall into the trap of focusing on that as the task I'm going to do. Thinking "Oh, I'll just tidy up my desk and then get to work" and then spending the next few hours cleaning.

That said the amount of work has to match the amount i'm getting paid... a working environment helps a lot too... and the thought of recognition, but that's kinda the same as getting paid, it's got to be recognition i intend to actually capitalize on in the future anyway.

I'm not shallow, I'm actually pretty down to earth and avoid flexing or showing my privelges irl. Here I'm just some random. Everything I typed out could be bs or it could be full blown honesty for all you know. Like I said I get interested (networking at the moment) in something normally master it. Then drop it. With a few highs and lows in between. Idk dude, I do procastine I'm not dying that. But I get existential. What's the purpose? Everything is finite. But I won't get into a philosophical rant.

hunter gatherer brain knows "working on what i need to" is a spook forced upon you by some asshole you should hit in the head with a stone axe.

well, what is the purpose? don't go philosophical. just ask yourself what you want to do. you don't need to justify yourself to me. just be honest with yourself. what are you doing? are you happy? would you rather be somewhere else? someone else?

This is what claude code looks like when it's been installed on a terminal. It's got the ability to run scripts locally, and it's easier to manage the context window since it's hosted locally. If you want, you could try a project called LifeOS. danielmiessler/LifeOS on github. Been using it for a couple days, it's been nice.

I don't think its that specifically but I do believe they've trained themselves to not have the ability to just stop. My mother is a fucking boomer and she is constantly looking at the phone now. Its not about friend dopamine its literally just training yourself to just always be doing something.

These people do not understand how it effects people because they appear normal and the only side effects they hear about are very minor. If you live with someone who has it like a gf or something they'll tell you how retarded you act/forget shit. Good example of this is people do tend to forget things on occasions when they are told. However if they've ever dealt or had adhd they'd know its almost like dealing with a fucking dementia patient with zero short term memory.

ADHDs != autists. They often appear together, but one thing that's true for pure ADHDs is that they have quite expressive reactions without having to do mentally exhausting masking. They can use voice speed and pitch to put in emphasis, use gestures and mimics, and they feel good about themselves AFTER social encounters, while autists might still manage to do some of these, but feel exhausted like crap.

Oh, and another thing.
With ADHDs they can switch from one topic to another. I went from American Civil War to Colorblindness to Age of Pirates Currency Exchanges to Programming to Modern Geopolitics to Predator Sting Operations to Criminal Law, and yet I wouldn't want to go back to any of them because it feels like I have gotten everything I wanted out of them.
With autists these interests are a lot more stable and long-term, to the point where it becomes an aspect of their personality. I can talk shit about a lot of things, but I wouldn't ever think of myself as a master in currency exchanges of the 17th and 18th centuries; it's just something interesting to ramble about.

so how does the being unfocused thing work with you?
as an autist I often can be unfocused, because my focus is currently on something else or I'm still switching my focus to something new which is slow for me - autistic brains claw deep into a task and struggle to get loose again

That's the thing, there are periods of intense focus for literal months, and everything's great during these. But then you suddenly lose interest - like, someone suggesting you make a career out of it. Like, bitch, I don't want to be FORCED into my interests.
And once you lose any interest you can barely go back. It's like, there's an irrational aversion I cannot fight, I get bored, procrastinate, try literally everything to distract me, but it's still there in the back of my mind.

No idea why people talk about drugs to "cure" ADHD in this thread, the idea in OP was clearly to try and mitigate it through technology, so things like programs, apps, smart devices, and so on and build a healthy lifestyle of routine habits out of them.
