>Vance just wanted to make the most out of his college experience under a totalitarian regime, and if that meant hacking into the university to assign himself a hot female roommate, then so be it. The last thing he expected was to be dragged into a crazy conspiracy to overthrow the government by his most-definitely-not-female roommate.

The teaser was a cliche fest like we have seen too many times. And therein lies the second problem: Neuromancer has already been pillaged by scriptwrites for soon 40 years and what Neuromancer launched was fresh then but not today. The scriptwriters have a tall mountain to scale.

Honestly? It's really stupid. Wearables and biotech will almost always beat out embedded machinery. The human body's security system makes the stuff you see in sci-fi very difficult. It's far easier to build exoskeletons rather than surgically rebuilding a humans skeleton.

Even if you were to have a perfect embedded cybernetic system. Your always going to be one step behind the curve. New tech is coming out every day, the technological process in the modern age across the total lifespan of a human is far too wide a gap to cross with one procedure. After 20 years you will be stuck with a toaster strapped to the side of your head.

Gibson and Shirley wrote about what they did years before, might be hard to prosecute, especially as Shirley is now super clean, in fact it is a miracle he survived.

it will be fun times, governments will try and implement some sort of control for the internet, namely I think TPM modules and digital ID but it will not be enough so governments will create more drastic measures, firstly segmenting internet into regions (europe region, us region, latin american region, african region, asia+russia region....) but eventually the real solution will come into a form of a new internet. It will be decentralized and not enforced by governments but found out by hackers who want to break away. Then governments will have no choice but adopt it

Current TMS tools are not precise enough to properly target the limbic system without effecting the surrounding area. Its like performing brain surgery with a shotgun.

Know your target and what's behind it.

Pumping the brain full high power wake up pulses has some adverse side effects.

TMS has a lot of potential if they can properly nail it to the floor without hitting major legal road bumps. Depending on the operator and the precision of the machine a lot of psychological problems could be repaired. On the other hand a lot of damage could be caused.

The best way to use it would be low power and only effect areas if the brain closest to the skull imo. The Frontal Lobe and Cerebellum are far better candidates for TMS modification. Remapping the motor cortex, increasing creativity etc.

It sounds like wishful thinking to me. Glowniggers are breaking apart the internet because it makes them itchy. Any mirage of a deeper, more natural reason for it is just a rationalization. And when they're done with it, there will be no return to normality and no miraculous hackernet, just like no miraculous hacker airline appeared to replace legacy infrastructure in twenty five years since they arbitrarily decided to punish free movement by making flighs prohibitively humiliating. When evil destroys something beautiful, it's broken forever.

No. It lacks the reliability of VMS. It has accumulated a lot of cruft, and the ABI/API promise means they cannot get rid of it. A flag day would have helped but that is not on the cards. I follow LWN and from the pictures I get the feeling the main programmers are all turning into greybeards. I hope they don't stagnate yet.

Linux is also a lot slower than KolibriOS (which just had a new release). VMS had continuing fine tuning and de-bloating.

I might go that route. AI is changing my line of work fundamentally and it is obvious for anyone who has bothered to look. Just yesterday I reviewed some AI products based on some input from me. It filled in all the blanks and the mistakes were few and insignificant. Last year it was not usable, more like the result of an hopped up over eager junior with a loose grip on reality, and the year before it was more the results of a really bad trip. Management has only the vaguest idea about the enormity of what is coming, and it is like they are discussing next year's designs for sails while people are quietly installing steam turbines in their ships. I am beginning to wonder if they are planning to escape it all by retiring. I have some ideas about better turbines, to follow this metaphor, but management thinks it will be sails all the way, just made from better canvas.

I remember years ago, reading history and wondered how people could possibly have failed to understand the changes that were coming, but now I am in the middle of an even larger change.

There’s drone surveillance, WiFi heat mapping and the ability to turn brainwaves into text. You’re living in a surveillance prison, hopefully you dont get noticed, used and fucked with. The types who go into surveillance aren’t the type of people you want to be around or associate with. You can get to a level where someone uses backdoors in public places playing music.

It is well worth reading, especially as it defined the genre. What was new in that book very quickly became cliches as others stole relentlessly and shamelessly from the Spral Trilogy.

>that other books like Snow Crash are better. Is this true?

Snow Crash is from the second wave of Cyberpunk. It is also good but very different. It is long, sprawling in all directions and has Stephenson's trademarked problems in ending a story in a way that doesn't feel like an out of control train going full tilt into the end stops at a terminal. His "short" stories such as "Hack the Spew" and "Jipi and the Paranoid Chip" have the same problems.

他的“短”篇如《Hack the Spew》和《Jipi and the Paranoid Chip》也有同样的问题。

The FAQ has some reading recommendations. If you are unsure, start with his collection of short stories in Burning Chrome.

at this point hiding your information from the glowniggers is next to near impossible, you either go full ghost mode schizo opsec fiend and keep close to a tight nit group of other shizos to partake in your dirty deeds

or

use the mass marketed security tools available to you if you still want to be a somewhat normal citizen but mindful of privacy and security from hackers, data brokers and general prying eyes

It only ever makes matters worse in the long term. The safer your data is from the general public, or rather, the higher gets the difference between its safety from the general public and from glowniggers, the more of a glownigger monopoly it becomes and the stronger gets their impetus to fuck shit up. If there's no way for them to spy on people without also letting people spy on each other, they would think twice every time they implement something stupid; if there's no way for people to use their shit alongside them, they wouldn't think at all as brainless hive bees they are. So yeah, no. When somebody complains about leaks, this somebody basically says he'd like to destroy the only system of checks that keeps glowies in line.

Yes. In general, the burden of proof rests on the person making a claim.

The basic idea is:

If someone asserts that something is true, they're responsible for providing evidence or reasons to support it.

Other people are not generally required to disprove the claim before withholding belief.

For example:

比如:

If I claim, "There is a hidden city beneath the ocean," it's my job to provide evidence for that claim.

It's not someone else's responsibility to prove that no such city exists.

This principle is common in:

Logic and critical thinking: Claims should be supported by evidence.

Science: Researchers must provide evidence for hypotheses.

Law: The burden of proof depends on the type of case (for example, in criminal cases, the prosecution generally bears the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt).

A related principle is that absence of evidence is not always evidence of absence, but if no evidence is presented, it's reasonable to remain unconvinced rather than accept the claim.

you should have told chatgpt the whole story. this is about trust. you don't trust someone blindly if you are looking to hide stuff from them.

let's say a new search engine comes and says "you can trust me, bro". would you use it just because they said that? there is no evidence of anything, they are new. so, what? does that mean there is no problem there?

assuming there is no technical evidence of wrongdoing, the way of knowing if something is trustable is to gather info on the reputation of those who own/manage the company, or its social/political/economic context. go look at their reputation. you can go this by googling.

and then it turns out the evidence wasn't complete, and they have to modify the whole theory. like gravity and relativity.

you could reinstall the backup in a VM probably.

The export fucntion probably needs the master password, so best you can do is copy/paste all the passwords to a file.
