I'm genuinely curious about this. Where I'm from, if you live near a cornfield, grabbing a few ears just to boil for dinner is pretty normal. Farmers don't really care as long as it's a small amount for personal use.

Sabertooth767 · 2026-08-17 21:35

Of course it's illegal; obviously you can't take other people's private property for your own use without permission.

Prestigious_Egg_1989 · 2026-08-17 21:36

No. And legality aside, the VAST majority of field corn is meant for livestock and would taste like ass. Better to buy actual sweet corn from someone selling it on their front lawn for dirt cheap.

Field corn is not sweet corn and would not taste good for dinner.

Sweet corn grows in a field, too. I know 99 percent corn in the Midwest isn't edible but in some regions it is.

Lots of the country has small family farms that grow corn for humans.

Field corn is an actual designation. It’s not just because it’s “grown in a field”.

It is if you pick it super early when the cob is still small, a bit larger than an okra pod. It's like really large baby corn. Roast it and you eat it cob and all.

Field corn, or dent corn, is harvested dry and used mainly for livestock feed, renewable fuel like ethanol, and processed food ingredients such as cornstarch, high-fructose corn syrup, and tortilla chips. It makes up the vast majority of all corn grown.

Why would I steal from a hardworking farmer? Most farmers where I grew up would also grow a patch of sweet corn which they’d sell by the side of the road. Pull up, drop $3 in a jar (honor system) and leave with a bag of fresh-picked corn from the table or stand.

Fun fact: If you wander around the rural Midwest doing this, you might get to chat with the FBI or CIA, as foreign adversaries literally steal corn from the field to get the modified genetics. Every couple of years there's a sting and they pick up CORN SPIES.

Theft is illegal. Most communities will have a food bank or sometimes farmers will donate to a local charity.  But taking from the field, or gleaning is not legal. Theft and tressspasing.

It's trespassing and theft. Absolutely it is illegal and a good way to really piss off a farmer. The US has strong private property laws and a strong private property culture. You cant just wander through private fields like you can in the UK or Europe (at least that's my impression of Europe).

If farmers are growing sweet corn (most corn is grown for cattle feed and can't just be boiled and eaten by humans) they have a farm stand where they will sell you some.

Field corn (also known as "dent" corn) is nearly tasteless. We eat a variety called "sweet" corn, and use field corn for animal feed, syrup, alcohol, etc. Sweet corn is grown is much smaller plots, and guarded more carefully against predators (including humans.)

Only in USA... In a country where trespassing or stealing is often a death penalty, it's safer not to steal even a bit of dirt. Instead, call or meet the farmer in a neutral public place and ask to try a taste of the corn. You'd probably receive plenty.

There is even an exception in my state for criminal trespass. Normally, it has to be posted or you have to be told unless it's a dwelling or such, but one where you don't need warning or to post, is if it's a field under cultivation.

I was dove hunting in northern Nevada one time and walked past a corn field. I took an ear and brought it home, thinking how neat it would be to have some fresh corn with my dove. This is when I learned that the corn grown in Nevada is grown as feed for livestock and is much harder and not nearly as sweet as the stuff that is grown for our consumption.
