#1 U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July /
Anonymous · 2026-08-07 15:00

The U.S. economy saw an unexpected declined in jobs during July while the unemployment rate edged lower, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday in a snapshot that showed a slowing employment picture.

Nonfarm payrolls fell by a seasonally adjusted 23,000 for the month, compared with a downwardly revised 20,000 for June. The Dow Jones consensus forecast had been looking for a gain of 83,000.

At the same time, the unemployment slipped to 4.1% as the labor force participation rate fell further to 61.4%, its lowest in more than five years, another indication that fewer Americans were working or looking for jobs.

In addition to the weak numbers for June and July, the final count for May was revised down to 63,000, or 66,000 lower than the prior estimate. The revised numbers brought the 12-month average down to just 34,000.

“The July employment report solidified that the labor market is not out of the woods quite yet,” said Nicole Bachaud, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter.

While jobs held flat, worker pay also saw virtually no gain during the month. Average hourly earnings increased by just 2 cents, bringing the 12-month average down to 3.2%, below the forecast increase of 3.5% and the lowest since May 2021.

Household employment, which measures the total of people reporting that they are working and is used to calculate the unemployment rate, fell by 87,000. However, the unemployment rate declined because of a decrease of 264,000 in the labor force. Outside of the Covid era, the participation rate is at its lowest since the middle part of 1976.

Let's assume this is true; you recognize this is a bad thing, right? Like this is historically a bad thing; immigrants usually fill jobs the native population doesn't have much interest in, at least in current times. They help to stem the flow of aging out workers in those positions (who themselves tend to consist of older immigrants) to keep those industries with an actual workforce. Without them, you wind up in a Japan situation where the older generation ages out and retires, but there's not enough people from the newer ones experienced enough to replace the old, leading to even worse economical issues.

Not really. California in the 19th century banned chinese immigrants because they felt like they were taking too many jobs for too cheap. They thought it would result in whites filling the places and overall wage growth.

It didn't. That shit literally kneecapped economic growth on the west coast for almost a century. They only started growing to get where they are today when the law got appealed. Surprisingly, it turns out that getting rid of immigrants doesn't result in natives filling the same jobs and wages going up; it results in businesses closing down because no one wants to work those jobs and they can't pay anyone more.

Yeah this doesn't work. Again, we literally had a test run of this idea during the Chinese Exclusion Act. No matter how "essential" people thought the jobs were, people just didn't do them. The pay wasn't there (and before you say "well they'll just boost wages", the money to do that wasn't there either) and what people were willing to do them were nowhere near as skilled and efficient as their immigrant counterparts because they had no experience and the people who would've taught them were the immigrants who got kicked out.

You can argue otherwise all you want, but we've got modern examples too; look at Japan, who combined a declining birthrate with hard anti-immigration and are currently facing a massive crisis where they have more demand for workers than they have workers.

Almost all jobs deserve a living wage. Forcing a minimum wage only causes inflation though.

So, are you confusing my disagreement with your, notably retarded, top down "solution" with a lack of advocacy for better pay?

Way to admit the living wage has outpaced minimum wage by miles while also admitting "not that we should do anything about that lol"

And how does that affect your state minimum wage?

There are only a few states that sill use the fed min. In those states, everyone is housed and fed better than most blue states.

So is the federal minimum wage a problem, or do you just like causing problems by being ignorant, idiotic and bitchy?

Much better than it did for the states that still use fucking $7 in this economy. You really wanna argue states like Alabama have a better quality of life than states like New Jersey or California?

Didn't the Romans import a bunch of barbarians to work as laborers in 4th century? What ever happened there? Were Barbarians the strength of Rome?

>Romans import a bunch of barbarians to work as laborers

Yeah and it worked for literal centuries and gave them some of their greatest ages and figures. Flavius Aetius, last of the romans and the roman general who defeated Atilla the Hun, was literally descended from the "barbarians".

The irony is that Rome ultimately got sacked because they eventually started reneging on immigration deals and not paying the same barbarian armies they employed to remove the previous emperor. Of course, prior to that the empire was already reduced to a skeleton of its former self due to decades of economic failure and civil wars, which ironically also includes the very one that the same Barbarians that ultimately did the final sacking of Rome were brought into and then screwed out of payment for.

No.

He was born in modern day Bulgaria, which by that time had been part of the empire for ~400 years and he was from a family that had Roman citizenship for generations. He was just a normal Roman.

>The visigoths were, but they didn't integrate and later turned against Rome.

They "didn't integrate" because the Eastern Romans literally vassalized them, used them as frontline troops against the West Romans, then basically left them out to dry after they took most of the casualties. And this was after a previous series of gothic rebellions because they got taxed to shit and treated as second class citizens.

The lesson is "Don't treat your vassals like pawns because they'll eventually decide they'd rather take over than fight your battles for you."
