I don't know where to publish this so I'm putting it here.

>The problem with the ai-ization of the internet, and search in particular, is that it optimizes for what is desired by the mean, at best, or the LCD, at worse. This is fine for polling opinion, terrible for facts. Consider what happens if I show this picture to 100 random people and ask who it is. A non-insignificant portion - likely even most - will say Optimus Prime. A few will say Gundam. A small fraction will say, "The RX-78-2 Gundam, aka Grandpa Gundam, piloted primarily by Amuro Ray during the One Year War in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime TV series."

>If you were to go to the anthropomorphized Google of yesteryear and ask it to direct you to someone who could tell you about the photo, it would point you to the last group, because they're the people who other people who have that photo point to when asked about it. That was the innovation of PageRank: it algorithmically [homed/honed/keyed] in on what was the expert and exacting solution by paying attention to websites that other websites trusted, similar to how the trustworthiness of a scientific study can be estimated by how often it's cited.

>A few years ago, Google started pointing you to the second group; people who had a general idea of "Gundam" who could point you to other things that they were interested in. This was the "brands" pivot that Google execs talked about at the time; small enthusiast websites were pushed down in favor of slick platforms like IGN and Facebook. The goal was no longer pointing you to information, but to an experience, and geeks are annoying and boring; better to send you to cool people who kinda know a little bit about what you're looking for.

>Now, with AI-driven results (and the massaging of your search query) Google sends you to the first, largest group. After all, their answer is the average of all the answers. It KNOWS that you're looking for Gundam, but it also knows that Gundam is a giant robot, and most people looking for giant robots are looking for Optimus Prime; why would you want to see Gundam, anyway, when everyone is looking for Transfomers?

>Google wants to get you to the most-likely answer as quickly as possible, and the most-likely answer is the one most people are looking for. Even if it's wrong.

>AI is optimization. It takes the uncertainty of a vast field of association and draws a confident path through it. But knowledge is specific. It's in the details that get optimized out if you're not careful.

(It might not actually work this way with a Gundam image like this, this is just a hypothetical illustrating how search feels in general these days.)

well google ignored all of that, instead it focused on a tiny part of the image and said it was a handbag or suitcase

Nice job completely ignoring the fact that tens of millions of jeet created websites exist solely to abuse the original PageRank algorithm and boost their SEO. Google constantly needs to update and adjust their search ranking algorithm otherwise you'd see nothing but SEO optimzied shartslop for the first 10000 pages.
