We're quickly approaching a time where there will be no working floppy disks left anywhere in the world anymore. All the disk factories shut down a decade ago and floppies only have about a 20 year lifespan. Working floppies are going to cost thousands of dollars some day soon because of how scarce they will be.

any kind would work. but ideally ones with metal shutters. always do a CLI format a: in windows. it will scan for bad sectors and tell you after formatting.

you can keep using devices that take floppies even when there's no working floppies left

if it's new enough to have a thinner style floppy drive in it there's probably a hdd in it as well you can put programs on instead, or pcmcia/serial to transfer stuff over using.

you don't always need to replace the floppy drive if there are other methods available, replacing the floppy specifically is more useful for devices where the floppy drive is the only normal means of loading software/data and the machine isn't easily replaced with something else. like if it's a pc laptop then you can probably use another pc/laptop instead.

you'd have to go pretty far back to find a laptop without a hdd or option for a hdd at which point it's probably a full size floppy drive as well

here's an example of a device where you practically have to use the floppy interface. there's lots of devices like this where the only means of storage is the floppy drive
