not long, really. the longest part was compiling the kernel. there's a binary kernel so you don't have to compo;e the kernel from source but in my opinion that kind of defeats the purpose of a system where everything is built specifically for your hardware and optimized for your machine.if you're a bit of a linux newbie, then the binary kernel will get you up and running faster so you can at least see if gentoo is a right fit for you. you can always run the config from the binary kernel through localmodconfig after plugging in every piece of hardware that is going to require any special drivers, and using that as the config file to build your own kernel (the binary kernel config comes with pretty much every module possible so it works with every computer, and localmodconfig strips out everything from the kernel config except for the parts that are specific to your hardware configuration)
