I mean it's just a filename but I don't see why a chatroom can't also have a community. Though that's besides the point.

Man, irc, that brings back some memories. That's like 20-25 years ago. Use to be on dalnet 6-8 hours a day. I still have chat logs. It was a thing when mircx came . Got DoS attack so hard it all disappeared. It's a pity,it was a lot of fun. Everyone got old, started families, moved on . Haven't been on a server for over 12 years i think. Changed comp and never reinstalled it.

Yeah, I hear a lot that it's a really old protocol I think even existed before the world wide web. Some websites still use it and have an IRC channel but no one's in them whenever I join.

I get that it's a thing for it's time but I really wanna escape big mainstream chat services like Discord and Telegram and IRC is brought up the most as a decentralized alternative.

I might just be chasing for a community that doesn't exist anymore. If only I could've been there when it was in it's prime.

If that's the case, I guess this thread can also act as a nostalgic throwback to share old stories about people's experiences with IRC.

if you don't want this, make sure to jump through hoops such as vhost and also take care it doesn't fall off during an automatic reconnect.

The way you use IRC Falls on you. Practice good Opsec. Some IRC servers support TOR or VPN's. Use a lightweight and reputable client. At least it's your fault if your IP gets exposed instead of being forced to use services that force you to do so.

About privacy and surveillance, i certainly would not use irc for that. Times have changed. What do you think all those data centers are built for? Everything is logged, every word, every sound, every picture, everything . You don't hide anything anymore. . Leave the phone home and go for a walk with friends to have private conversations.

i always wanted to be in a niche community or a secret club but i realize most people are lame faggots once you get to know them. Sometimes i day dream about starting my own secret club and inviting anons that are cool. We'd have a website that would be like our "club house" with a forum or image board for communication (NO live chatroom, that is lame and invites e-dating tier communication that not everyone can follow). We'd all have access to the server via our own user accounts and git so anyone could make improvements to the website code, and anyone could start new services to "improve the club house" so to speak. Maybe we'd do fun projects like start a collection of movies, music, e-books, leaked databases, cracked games, etc. Maybe we could setup a IPTV pirate stream that could could access via a "TV" tab on the website which you could also setup your own streams to watch movies together and whatnot. Maybe we'd program our own chan framework to have better performance & features than traditional chan frameworks. Maybe we'd eventually host free file servers & proxy servers for anyone to use. People would contribute what they felt like none of it would be forced.

But then alas i wake up and realize this is a pretty cringe idea and nobody would bond over this "club house" in the way i imagine and of course nobody would want to contribute this amount of work either. It would just go the way of every other /g/ project ever which went stale after someone made the logo, and nobody would ever post or say anything except for performative shit like on private tracker forums. Oh well.

nta but it depends on the server. The servers can see if you are connecting from a Tor exit node and it's not uncommon for them to block the connection when they do. There are however plenty of servers that allow Tor connections through onion links. If they do they probably say so on their website. Smaller to medium-sized tech and privacy focused servers would be a good place to start.
