literally the cleanest power generation option out there

Something about collisions and corruption in the government and oil industry. There's multiple accounts of the CIA killing people trying to make hydrogen powered cars that are significantly more optimal to power via just water. You would imagine this extends to other machines like computers but instead we're spending billions to people that own the market for their data centers and personal power plants because they want that money and control.

NIMBYs & regulators.

It takes a looooong time to find a place that you can dam up without it getting gummed up in legal challenges.

Just build your own waterfall make like a loop system and boom infinite energy.

Clean? It's absolutely devastating for the environment. Also it's quite good at causing earthquakes, like real ones, not the tiny shit ostensibly created by fracking.

Unironically you can do sort of that (albeit with input energy). I believe Norway does that sort of thing with excess solar energy or whatever. They use all that energy during bright sunny days to pump water up hill or up into a tower, and then when they need energy later they run turbines off the water coming back down. It's essentially a battery I suppose.

They mismanage and gimp niagara falls all the time. Hydro could be doing so much heavy lifting and they know it but it wouldn't be profitable so they just sell off excess to higher bidders far away andjew the fuck out of the local populations.

>t.live next to niagara falls, still pay ridiculous prices for electric despite them shippng our electricity that we fund all the way to FLORIDA

Not the cleanest. Kills wildlife and changes the weather patterns.

Cleanest power generation is nuclear, specifically Liquid thorium salt reactors

It's not. It's actually quite taxing.

Hydro power storage is pretty neat though.

Pumped hydro requires a high elevation with lots of room coupled with a nearby water source, it’s very specific geography that doesn’t exist everywhere

A simple water tower doesn’t hold nearly enough water to do much for utility scale you need to be able to put a lake sized holding tank high up

I don't think locality detracts from the merits of the producer/generator.

Yes it is geographically particular in a sense, but it can be artificially made if it made sense too, and more importantly, those issues mentioned are of storage and transport not production.

Shortcomings in battery and transmission, not hydro production itself. In theory if those were solved independently it would still be a good source of power if you could store and transport it optimally.
