1960s was a pivotal decade.

A lot of foundational CS stuff happens.

But also the decade where governments and other rogue powers decide to really start fucking up the social fabric and permanently hobbling progress.

I mean seriously. People rave about how we need to be hiring labor from overseas because the people in the east are so smart and americans are so dumb. But then you stop and think about it and like, every major breakthrough in computing was done by some white guy from a middle class home in the US or Europe.

he warned you, and you did not listen, notice how six of your complaints are about actual technology being dogshit, you are also flawed in the sense that back then there was lots of things to do or discover, theres hardly anything new that can be done these days without massive investment and it will end up being used in the most awful way probably (see AI), also why are you literally comparing yourself with the people who invented the transistor or X big thing?? you got sold on the idea every that student ends up being tony stark after graduation or some shit? lol, ..keep believing your infinite improvement myth.

>theres hardly anything new that can be done these days without massive investment

i disagree. and the same thing was true for all of those previous advancements i mentioned.

ai cost money because of hardware, not necessarily because the underlying technology required it. openai was originally a team of what, like 20 people? Ilya Sutskever led most of the development iirc.

and you act like previous advancements like the internet, transistors, and personal computing didn't require massive hardware investment too. you do realize that most of that stuff was rooted in US government defense contracts, right? ffs mainframe computers were so expensive that IBM wouldn't even sell them, you were typically only allowed to lease them.

>also why are you literally comparing yourself with the people who invented the transistor

because they were like me? they were mostly middle class white guys (key word, mostly). when i went to college there were many such cases of professors that worked at bell labs or something right out college, didn't really even apply, they got recruited, and then worked on some cutting edge technology like dial up in the 80s right out the gate.

these technologies were not created by one single guy like elon or tony stark, they were created by teams of everyday engineers that had salt of the earth upbringing from across america. instead, nowadays tech companies largely ignore the flyover markets, hire mostly from the coasts and overseas, and then on top of that the work you do is slop.

All science fields/sub fields follow S curve.

>At the start some genius invents the field,

>Lots of easy discoveries to be made and every year something new in the field happens shaping future history.

>Every easy and obvious thing gets discovered, problems become harder to spot and harder to figure out, innovation slows down

Also there was plenty of innovation and still is. From 80s to 2010s there was massive improvements to the hardware, videogames got invented and became realistic looking and the internet had plenty of real discoveries up until at least 2005 or 2010 after which it was mostly applying existing discoveries. Now the new frontier is AI in tech, but zoomers can’t get into that because AI requires significantly more in compute compared to work required. Also internet was not actively automating internet developers away, but you can’t say the same with AI and it’s impact on the whole tech sector and beyond.

you also typically need a PhD or at least a masters to be doing real AI research. i'm sure openAI and google will hire certain undergrads but the vast majority of people doing real ai development have a PhD with a specialization in the field, which is incredibly expensive and takes a lot of time.

Yes, also AI research is incredibly centralised. You have Google deepmind, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and then whatever Meta is doing as the only real land with enough AI researchers, and each of them has like 300 jobs max involving AI research. Each of their respective companies have thousands in web developers and IT. AI boom in terms of jobs is nothing even close to any software bubble.
