The cost of living crisis is ultimately an inflation crisis. There's too much cheap money in the system because banking insiders can lobby the government for truck loads of BS fiat currency whenever they lose big in the markets. Being on the Gold Standard would constrain the bankers and governments in terms of how much latitude they have to change the rules of the game whenever it suits them.

There isn't enough gold on the planet to pay for global trade. If you increase the value of gold to cover global trade it goes to millions of dollars per ounce and you have to outlaw owning it otherwise one dude with a shovel and a gold pan can go make millions of dollars per month working part time

Nope you just make a digital gold asset that is pegged to the supply of all the gold in existence which is roughly 244,000 tonnes of gold and when someone mines it that would be natural inflation. A 1:1 ratio puts the total gold to $35 trillion. If you go to a river and mine some that would be roughly $11 to $114, not millions. Gold mining companies would then be responsible to the inflation instead of the fed which is killing all of our buying powers. This would be a better model than the fiat one.

No, you offer them credit at a higher interest rate, interest paid in gold. The economy will grow at the natural rate, inline with the natural stages of human life. The fiat juices aberration of modernity is not natural.

The problem is not and has never been credit, its fiat, and even more so, fiat credit. Without gold to anchor prices to something in the real world, the price signal in the economy drifts into the ether.

People think hyperinflation means “prices go up really fast”. Thats not correct, hyperinflation fundamentally is “I don’t know what anything costs today, and I don’t know what the price will be tomorrow”. This paradox is the price signal breakdown and tends towards infinity. Money is not a points system, it’s a real physical thing with mass, and when a monetary system departs from any anchoring in the physical the result is always the same.

How about we just don't use gold only and instead just use every commodity and equity instead of money? We have the computers to middle man all these trades. I should be able to go to McDonalds and pay with corn or McDonalds stock if I want and then McDonalds would receive what they want out of the trade with the computer making the trades automatically. The value of everything would be measured against the value of everything else and the "price" would just be a unit-less number and not an actual thing you can own by itself.

A gold-backed-currency economy experiences inflation every time a new gold source is found for mining, even if new currency hasn't been minted yet. The expectation that new currency will enter the system in the future sends prices up.

The current global inflation situation (past 6 years) has as much or more to do with interruptions to the labor force and resources (oil) as anything else. Retired boomers still consume but don't produce, so events such as covid drive prices higher, because boomers leaving the workforce in droves still demand goods but also create a labor shortage, driving labor costs up the price of everything. Countries that haven't engaged in any quantative easing (fiat currency printing) at all have still experienced too-high inflation since 2020.

> A gold-backed-currency economy experiences inflation every time a new gold source is found for mining, even if new currency hasn't been minted yet.

This is not true. You are making a pure quantity theory argument while you ignore the quality theory of money. Simply increasing the money supply does not guarantee a rise in general prices, the Chinese experienced this after the warring states period.

你这是纯货币数量论(quantity theory of money)的论调,却无视货币质量论(quality theory of money)。

After like 2 centuries of war and sending huge numbers of men to build parts of the Great Wall, china’s agricultural production has fallen significantly. The result was price inflation of food staples which the ruling government at the time attributed to a lack of money. So what did they do, they reduced the weight of copper in the money and minted more coinage of lesser quality. Prices inflated further. Eventually the abandoned the policy and returned to minting coinage with the proper weight of copper, they found prices stabilized regardless of how much new money they created. As long as the quality of the newly created money was consistent, prices did not inflate. This is quality theory of money.

In a commodity money standard, simply increasing the money supply will not result in a general rise in prices, especially when producing commodity money takes time. Now if you had a situation where suddenly out of no where, the amount of gold coinage in everyone’s pockets doubled, then yes there would be an acute price inflation. But that’s not and has never been a realistic scenario.

> The current global inflation situation (past 6 years) has as much or more to do with interruptions to the labor force and resources (oil) as anything else

Patently incorrect. The price inflation over the last few years is entirely the fault of the FED, who created 5 trillion in new dollars between 2020/2021 and injected these new dollars directly into the real economy via assets purchases from non-bank entities.

I might as well tell you about my idea to get rid of money all together since nobody replied to me. As far as I understand it money was invented so people didn't have to carry around all of their barter goods to market. Since everyone is walking around with a computer now why can't we go back to a pure barter economy? How is money not obsolete? I should be able to trade anything in my brokerage account for any item or service and the person receiving payment should get anything they want with the computer being the market maker. We even have AI agents to do all of this automatically so I'm not having to manually trade stuff. I don't know what the problem would be with this.

Not just that, but also because it's much more convenient for people to get paid by their employer in a currency people have all agreed has a specific value to trade for goods and services.

This is why money was invented, to save and delay purchasing power, you produce more than you consume and its called profit when you exchange it for gold, you use gold later when you need something. Computer or digital money is counter party risk, unless you create digital money yourself, but even then computer itself is a risk, because it can fail, only risk gold has is yourself because you can lose it or forget where it is, but that risk depends on you alone, no one else.

Leaving it wasn't a choice. America overprinted dollars in order to win ww2, the gold standard essentially died then. It continued to exist on paper until Nixon's time, when France realized the disparity and tried to cash out Fort Knox. Nixon ended the standard to prevent this, but if their trade was allowed the gold standard still would have died, plus the dollar's value would collapse and France would have all our gold.

The mistake was the rest of the world's, continuing to trust the dollar standard after it stopped being backed by anything. It gave America the freedom to overprint for decades without suffering inflation, as other nations happily stockpiled our excess as "reserves". The trade deficit that everyone complains about was a good thing, other nations kept sending us real physical resources in exchange for our worthless paper.

Now that our reserve currency status is ending, we should rip off the bandaid, let inflation run until a new balance is naturally found for all these excess dollars. Inflate away the debt of all our treasury bonds, since we can no longer reissue at near-zero.

That post is very stupid in many ways, for example, he says that those who owned gold could lay claims on property, but he forgets to mention how they got gold in the first place and to get gold, you need to work and make profit, so you can exchange profit for gold and future consumption, gold is not needed in general for consumption, its only a tool to save and consume stuff later, or give it to some one who produce stuff (invest) and get rewarded (dividend) from other people production.
