Is the M1 model still suitable for me who need portability and long battery life right now?

I'm looking for recommendations for a 16GB M-series chip macbook that meets both of these requirements. They have been 10 years old, and I'm worried that it won't work without system or software updates, but updating to a new system would reduce my need for longer battery life.
