Apple SuperDrive & Late 2009 MacBook

I have a Late 2009 MacBook which still works fine with me. However, its optical drive no longer works.

I have an Apple A1379 SuperDrive that I use with my Late 2014 MacMini to watch movies on DVD. It works fine.

However, today I tried to connect the SuperDrive to the MacBook (as opposed to the Mac Mini). The MacBook would not recognize the SuperDrive.

Is it because the MacBook has an inbuilt optical drive?

Is there really no way I can get the MacBook to work with the SuperDrive?

This is my info, if the 2009 Macbook has the "remote disc" feature listed, you can use the 2014 mini with the super drive connected, connect your 2009 to the same network as the 2014.

Fwiw I have a bunch of low cost name and no name opticals like the one linked never any issues with them.

for the 2009 MB, at least go with a well known brand such as LG, Samsung, esc.
