The only down side, the power button is on the bottom.

My main gripe w/ Apple is the absurd price they charge for memory. When I upgraded my mini to the M4, I went with a 256G internal, and added a 4T external M.2 thunderbolt4 drive and use that as main storage. For what Apple charges, you can get far more bang for your buck investing in an ext. drive. The Thunderbolt4 interface is super-fast (note not every port on the M4 mini’s support that speed).

At first I was reluctant to have such a puny internal SSD, but after loading it up with the apps I use plus the OS, I still have 100G available for growth, and the 4T external is more than enough for my music, movies, photo/s and various content.

I agree w/ Max that the power button is awkward, but it’s not a deal breaker (for me anyway). I leave mine on all the time and just put it to sleep when not using it.

One other thing I will note about the Mini is it has a tendency not to wake up dual monitors properly, I have a workaround, but even my M2 has that issue and I’ve never found a suitable fix. I would welcome any feedback if anyone’s seen that as well, and has come up with a permanent solution.

I agree with you on the RAM, but the RAM is part of the processor, so you don't have much of a choice when it come's to the M series processor.

When it comes to drive space with the internal SSD, I wouldn't buy an external SSD (other then for a backup drive) at first, I would see how much space is left on the internal SSD after everything is installed, which you can always get an external SSD for the home folder only & not for everything.
关于内部 SSD 的存储空间，我建议别一开始就买外接 SSD（除了做个备份盘），先看看装完所有东西后内部还剩多少空间。剩下的空间可以再按需买外接 SSD，比如只用来装主文件夹，而不是把所有东西都塞进去。

When it comes to wake from sleep issue. yea, mine does that but it's like once in like 2 or 3 months, I just simply power down the M2, then power it back up, using the power button. I only have 1 decent size monitor, really don't need two monitors.

What I have is plenty fast enough at this time. I'm getting around 1500 Mbps R/W times (internal SSD) based on the software mention in the article (which I've had for years).

That pretty messed up considering the M4 mini back ports are USB 4/Thunderbolt 4.

the speed is not going to be any better then the XS2000 SSD (I mentioned) on a Mac in that case, which will be slower then my internal SSD in my M2 mini.

If the OP wants to run an external with speed that's actually the same or faster then the internal SSD on that M4, he would have to go with a Thunderbolt type SSD housing, which is likely going to be expensive, & way more then the OP needs.

Unless the OP stores a lot of stuff the internal SSD of a 256GB or even a 512GB should be big enough for what the OP needs based on what the OP claims he is going to use it for.

It's just going to cost around $50 for the case only, as the SSD is separate & it has to be installed.

I have one similar to that under my M2 mini, but it does not have an SSD, it's just for front USB ports/ SD card slot.
我 M2 Mac mini 下面也有个类似的，不过里面没装 SSD，只是用来扩展前置 USB 口和 SD 卡槽的。
