I visited Switzerland, Germany, and Italy with friends last month and came away with a very different view of Western Europe than expected. I encountered hostility and genuine hatred toward Americans, including locals calling America a shit hole and Americans “dumb and ignorant.” There seemed to be significant xenophobia and blatant racist behavior toward Black and Asian tourists. It was eye-opening after growing up hearing that America was inferior to Europe. Interestingly, my experiences in several Eastern European/Slavic countries were completely different. People were much more welcoming, friendly, and eager to show us around.
