During the summer review cycle for NeurIPS, WACV, and TerraBytes, the authors analyzed 22 paper submissions and found that 68% contained fabricated citations, fake author lists, or were clearly generated by LLMs. This phenomenon, described as being in the "slop trenches," represents a significant waste of time for reviewers and highlights the pervasive issue of AI-generated academic slop.
