Ensemble forecasts for July 2026 indicate that this year's El Niño is not only likely to be the strongest on record, but may surpass previous events by a significant margin. The multi-model median predicts a peak sea surface temperature anomaly of 3.6C in the Niño 3.4 region, substantially exceeding the prior record of 2.75C set in 2015-16.
