In April 2026, an alleged member of Scattered Spider was identified not by his VPN traffic, but by the Global Device ID (GDID), a persistent Windows identifier tied to Microsoft accounts. This 64-bit PUID is assigned by Microsoft servers upon login and is reported via system services regardless of IP changes or telemetry settings.
