In 1985, MIT professor William Freeman proposed a three-sided zipper prototype to create items with tunable stiffness, but the idea was rejected and patented in obscurity until recently. Nearly 40 years later, MIT CSAIL researchers revived the concept by developing an automated design tool and adaptable fastener called the "Y-zipper."
