A recent study by Yale University and the University of Pisa has confirmed that Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici and his wife Bianca Cappello died of malaria rather than arsenic poisoning. By extracting DNA from Francesco’s skeletal remains, researchers identified genetic traces of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae parasites.
