In 1988, a Scottish hi-fi company named Linn Products shipped the Rekursiv processor, a custom silicon chip that anticipated modern computing concepts by handling memory bounds checking and garbage collection in hardware. Although the project was eventually abandoned and buried, its underlying ideas are now realized in production silicon from Arm, and the economic landscape has shifted to favor such innovations.
