Lisa Cook, the Federal Reserve governor
Now she is at the centre of a battle that could have sweeping implications for the world's biggest economy. On Monday, Donald Trump moved to fire Cook, accusing her of committing mortgage fraud. But she has refused to go quietly. On Thursday morning she filed a lawsuit against the president's "unprecedented and illegal" attempt to remove her, asking for a judge to rule that Trump's move was unlawful, and that she remains an active member of the Fed's powerful board of governors. It paves the way for a legal showdown that will define how far Trump can take his attack on an institution that has been independent since 1951 and sets interest rates underpinning trillions of dollars in assets worldwide.
