AMD has acquired AI chip startup Taalas, a Toronto-based company founded in 2023 that bakes model weights directly into silicon, promising to boost inference performance by an order of magnitude or more. The deal, announced at market close on Thursday, is positioned similarly to Nvidia's $20 billion licensing agreement with Groq last December, aiming to make high-performance "premium" inference services for AI agents faster and cheaper to run.
